Definition of Organization of American States (OAS):

1. Created in 1948 in Bogota, Colombia, to promote Latin American and (by extension) Caribbean economic and social development. Its current 34 active members are Antigua & Barbuda, Argentina, Bahamas, Barbados, Belize, Bolivia, Brazil, Canada, Chile, Colombia, Costa Rica, Dominica, Dominican Republic, Ecuador, El Salvador, Grenada, Guatemala, Guyana, Haiti, Honduras, Jamaica, Mexico, Nicaragua, Panama, Paraguay, Peru, St. Christopher-Nevis, St. Lucia, St. Vincent & the Grenadines, Suriname, Trinidad & Tobago, USA, Uruguay, and Venezuela. Although Cuba was one of its original members, but had its membership suspended since 1962. Headquartered in Washington, DC.

2. An association including most of the countries of North and South America, originally founded in 1890 for largely commercial purposes. From 1948 it has aimed to work for peace and prosperity in the region and to uphold the sovereignty of member nations. Its headquarters are in Washington DC.
