Subprime loans or mortgages are provided to borrowers with poor credit who often cannot get a more conventional loan. Borrowers invest little or no money themselves.

In recent years, a wave of subprime mortgages has swept across the United States. While this was initially seen as a blessing and allowed more people to buy their own homes, it has now turned into a crisis as more and more borrowers default.

Homes are being repossessed and banks are now forced to write off mortgage debts. The effect spread far beyond the United States as banks around the world bought these subprime loans, which were often pooled into debt pools called collateralized debt.
